About

Our Mission

To promote Stagville as a cultural and historical resource by preserving and interpreting its history with a focus on celebrating the heritage, agency, resilience, and self-empowerment of its enslaved and descendant communities.

What We Do

What is the Historic Stagville Foundation?

As Historic Stagville’s official fundraising partner,  the Foundation is an all-volunteer, 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization which raises funds to support Stagville’s programs, education, maintenance, preservation, and development. The Board works in close partnership with the site staff.

The Foundation is led by a volunteer Board of Directors, which meet monthly to focus on specific tasks such as fundraising, publicity, budgeting, and volunteering on site. The Board prioritizes diverse membership that reflects the community.

Please visit the Historic Stagville State Historic Site online to learn more about upcoming events, education, and history. We would love you to follow Stagville on Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter.

What is Historic Stagville?

Historic Stagville is a North Carolina State Historic Site that preserves the remnants of one of the largest plantations in North Carolina. Stagville is dedicated to interpreting the lives, culture, and labors of enslaved people on the Bennehan-Cameron plantations. The Bennehan-Cameron family enslaved over 900 people across 30,000 acres of land in Piedmont North Carolina. The site also documents the history of descendants of enslaved people. Today, the site includes 165 acres of land, four original slave dwellings (c. 1851), a massive barn (c. 1860), and a Bennehan-Cameron family house (c. 1787-1799). Stagville is part of the North Carolina Division of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Join the Board

Board members* are expected to attend one meeting a month—currently the 2nd Tuesday of the month, from 6 to 7:15 pm, in Durham. At each meeting, the site staff give a monthly report, and the Board votes on upcoming projects and spending.

*In accordance with the Foundation’s fundraising mission, each Board member is expected to make a financial commitment as they are able, and to volunteer at fundraising events, usually held once per year. Board members are considered ambassadors of Stagville and are charged with representing Stagville in the local community and across the state. Once appointed, each Board member serves a term of 2 years, with the possibility of renewal. Contact the Board Chair Michael Williams at historic.stagville.foundation@gmail.com if you are interested.
